Colin Turkington eager to get strong season end
STCC heads to Jyllandsringen in Denmark this weekend, the first venue of the year that features a track where Colin Turkington has raced on before. The BMW driver finished second in the premiere and wants to get back on the podium.
“It is a completely different thing going to a race track where you have raced before and hopefully I can put the knowledge to good use. My goal is to finish on the podium,” said Turkington to TouringCarTimes.
Turkington had a strong start of the season and was positioned third in the championship after the two first race weekends. But the mid-season races at Mantorp and Gothenburg proved to be difficult for the 2009 BTCC champion who has dropped to seventh in the championship.
The Flash Engineering driver is hoping to turn things around this weekend.
“The results were really good in Denmark last time and the car has for sure progressed since then. The track suits the BMW and we have got a few new ideas to try this weekend,” said Turkington.
While Turkington has got his sights set on a podium finish, the opposition is going to be extra tough this weekend with new drivers like Casper Elgaard and Fabrizio Giovanardi.
“It is really hard to know what to expect in the STCC. I would like to be on the podium again, but it is not always easy to achieve that. The most important thing is to get a good position in qualifying, as far up as possible, to get a strong start to the weekend,” said Turkington.
Three races remain of the STCC 2011 season with 150 points still left to fight for. Turkington has got 76 points up to the championship lead but is nonetheless hopeful.
“I hope to end the season quite strongly. In the first season of a championship it is difficult to get the good consistent results at every weekend, there is so much for me to learn. But now that we are going back to three tracks that I’ve been to, it is going to be a big help and I am going to try to be as high up as possible,” said Turkington.
