Rickard Rydell voted best STCC driver of 2011
Chevrolet driver Rickard Rydell was voted as the best driver of the 2011 Scandinavian Touring Car Championship by the readers of TouringCarTimes.
“I am very glad and proud to have won this award, it is a special thing as it is the real fans who are voting,” said Rydell.
Rydell secured the STCC title with just two points over main rival Fredrik Ekblom after a controversial final race of the year where appeals still have not been decided.
“It has been a great season. The goal for us was to win when we entered STCC and it has been an incredibly tough and close season, tougher than ever. It was really nice to win in my first year back racing in Sweden since 1988,” said Rydell.
The Swede received 35% of the votes, beating closest rivals in the form of BMW drivers Colin Turkington on 11% and Richard Göransson on 10%. Volvo returnee Robert Dahlgren was fourth on 6% with Mattias Andersson and Ekblom sharing fifth on the exact same number of votes on 5%.
Rydell is going to continue in the STCC next year for Chevrolet Motorsport Sweden and the goal is to secure a second title.
“It is really nice to continue the cooperation, I had a good year with Chevrolet and it felt right to continue. The goal for next year is the same as this year. It is not going to be as tough overall next year with some drivers going to TTA, but I still think there is going to be a strong top with drivers such as Johan Kristoffersson and more,” said Rydell.
