Kristoffersson and Rydell stay close in the points
Johan Kristoffersson and Rickard Rydell keep close in the points championship after the third STCC race of the year, this time at Sturup Raceway. Kristoffersson came away with most points, but only just.
“It was important that I had Rydell behind me and that I managed to extend my points lead,” said Kristofferson.
Kristoffersson left Sturup with five points to Rydell, a gap that was four points ahead of the race.
“It was an okay weekend after all, despite the problems we had in qualifying. We saved many points that could have been lost,” said Rydell.
Rydell qualified a low seventh for the first race when Robin Appelqvist crashed as the Chevrolet driver was about to set his time on his only set of new tyres. But Rydell was not alone on having problems as Kristoffersson had to change engine after an incident with his title rival.
“That incident caused a hole in the oil sump and we were lucky that the oil didn’t leak out. The damage was so extensive that we had to change the engine between the races. We made it just in time,” said Team Manager Tommy Kristoffersson.
Kristoffersson heads the championship on 109 points with Rydell on 104. The team championship is the other way around with Chevrolet Motorsport Sweden leading on 186 points and Volkswagen Team Biogas on 157 points.
STCC continues at Mantorp Park in three weeks.
