Chevrolet wrap up teams’ championship at Knutstorp
Chevrolet Motorsport Sweden have won the 2012 Team’s Championship in the STCC at Knutstorp, after two wins and with both drivers finishing on the podium in both of today’s races.
The team leads in the standings by 114 points with just 86 available at the final race meeting at Solvalla in two weeks’ time.
It’s Chevrolet’s first teams’ title in the STCC, after Rickard Rydell won their first drivers’ title last season, and after his victory in race two today and Michel Nykjaer’s second place, they have both moved ahead of Volkswagen Team Biogas driver Johan Kristoffersson in the drivers’ championship as well.
“This was one of the main goals for this season and now we have both Rydell and Michel up there to win the drivers’ championship,” said Team Principal Nicklas Karlsson to TouringCarTimes. “So a perfect weekend and really good work from the team and the drivers, I couldn’t be happier.”
Although Chevrolet have recently withdrawn from both the British and now World Touring Car Championships, the ex-racer turned team owner is confident that Chevrolet will remain racing in Sweden next year.
“We have them with us,” said Karlsson. “Of course we need to know that it is a strong series, that’s important for us and it’s important for Chevrolet that we’re competing with good teams and strong brands…it’s looking positive for the future.”
