Richard Göransson: “Not an honest fight by Volvo”
BMW Dealer Team driver Richard Göransson criticized Volvo Polestar Racing after Thed Björk’s victory in the first STCC race at Falkenberg where he claims Björk was let past in to the lead by Fredrik Ekblom.
“I think it is low by Volvo not to take an honest fight for the championship,” said Richard Göransson, the main championship rival to Björk.
BMW driver Fredrik Larsson held the lead in the first race, but retired in a spectacular style when his rear window came loose and diverted the air from his rear wing, causing him to crash in the fastest corner of the circuit.
This handed the lead to Volvo driver Fredrik Ekblom, who was passed easily by Thed Björk a couple of laps later.
“I want to say that I am really surprised that Volvo with five cars in the championship uses team orders in the championship already after half the season. It feels too early and it does not look good,” said Dick Jönsson-Wigroth, team manager of BMW Dealer Team WestCoast Racing.
Björk claimed his fourth straight win and was not concerned by the statements made by Göransson and BMW Dealer Team.
“Ekblom helped me last year and it will all even out in the end. We are fighting for the title, it is as simple as that,” said Björk.
Göransson, who finished fourth in both races, still only lost one point in the championship to Björk after the weekend as Björk retired with only three laps left of the second race.
“It wasn’t a good weekend and it was the qualifying session that ruined it. I wasn’t good enough to put it simply and it was the first time for that this year. Overall it is still okay. I have increased the gap to the drivers behind me. It is time to recharge the batteries for the final half of the season, the others will have to try hard to keep up with us then,” said Göransson.
