Jason Plato heads Jack Goff in second Brands practice
Triple Eight’s Jason Plato topped the times again in an incredibly close second practice at Brands Hatch, with Jack Goff staging a last-minute run to finish second.
Plato set the pace early on in the session in his MG6, and none of his competitors were able to depose him. But Team BMR’s Goff came closest with a lap just 0.012 slower, set with 10 seconds left on the clock.
There was less than 0.1 seconds covering the top seven, and under 0.9 seconds covering the top 24 cars.
Reigning champion Andrew Jordan was third for Eurotech Racing, ahead of Plato’s team-mate Sam Tordoff, with Aron Smith behind him making it two Team BMR cars in the top five.
The top 10 was completed by impressive debutant Tom Ingram in the Speedworks Motorsport Toyota Avensis, ahead of Colin Turkington, Gordon Shedden, Matt Neal and an equally impressive Martin Depper.
Fabrizio Giovanardi again struggled to get up to speed in the Motorbase Performance Ford Focus, finishing 13th in the standings, while Alain Menu was down in 18th, having completed only seven laps.
There was a brief red flag with seven minutes to go after Warren Scott had an off at Paddock Hill in his Team BMR Vauxhall Insignia. Scott was able to creep out of the gravel and return to the pits.
There were issues for Rob Austin, who suffered a front left puncture on his Audi A4, while Ollie Jackson completed his first laps in his new Welch Motorsport Proton Gen-2. He only set one flying lap, and was 30th and last.
Hunter Abbott, Jack Clarke and Fabrizio Giovanardi were all given warnings for exceeding track limits.
Qualifying for the first of tomorrow’s three races is at 15:40 GMT.
