Silverstone to host a 24 hour touring car race in April
The organisers of the 24H Series have announced plans to run a non-championship, touring car only race at the Silverstone circuit on April 1st-3rd 2016, which is set to add a new class specifically for cars built to the new TCR Series technical regulations.
The series features already features a variety of touring cars, but the top tier is a GT affair. However, this particular event will be a non-championship round for touring cars only, and therefore will not count as part of the 24H Series championship in terms of points.
The 2015 series features rounds at Dubai, Mugello, Zandvoort, Paul Ricard, Barcelona & Brno, with the iconic Silverstone circuit the latest addition to their calendar.
“We will refer to the Hankook 24H Silverstone as our ‘European touring car edition’ and we are really delighted with this addition to our portfolio of events,” said Helen Roukens of organisers Creventic.
“We are determined to make the Hankook 24H Silverstone even more firmly established in the international motor racing world and to further increase the profile of the event,” she added.
Stuart Pringle, sporting director of Silverstone Circuit, added: “I am delighted that CREVENTIC has reached a deal to take over the running of the annual 24 hour race at Silverstone. They run some excellent endurance races in Europe and further afield and I look forward to them bringing a very healthy entry to Silverstone in 2016 and beyond.”
The series will continue to permit cars within its current touring car framework, from 1.6 litre (A2) to 3.5 litre (A5) class cars as well as diesel touring cars.
Typical vehicles in the A5 class include BMW M3 coupés, while the A3T class features the SEAT León Cup Racer as well as the previous generation León Supercopa, while A2 class cars include B-segment Cup cars such as the Renaultsport Clio and Peugeot RCZ.
“On top of that, we want to run an additional class for cars to TCR regulations, plus a category for youngtimers and classics,” added Roukens.
