Árón Taylor-Smith suffers leg fracture in Croft incident
Triple Eight has confirmed that Árón Taylor-Smith has suffered a fracture to his left leg following the multi-car accident that forced qualifying for the fifth round of the BTCC season to be abandoned.
Taylor-Smith was one of ten drivers to be caught up in the incident that occurred on the exit of Barcroft after oil was dropped by the Motorbase Performance Focus of Luke Davenport, with the Irish driver’s MG6 GT making heavy contact with Jeff Smith’s Eurotech Racing Honda Civic.
Taylor-Smith was the first of the three drivers who required assistance to be removed from their cars to be taken to hospital after checks in the circuit medical centre, with the team confirming a fracture to his left leg.
The 27-year-old will remain in the James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough overnight to be monitored for a concussion that was also suffered in the incident.
Taylor-Smith is however reported to be in ‘remarkably good spirits’ by the team, with ‘thanks being passed to the Marshals, medical staff, circuit and competition officials for their incredibly prompt and effective work managing such a serious incident’.
Both Davenport and Smith were airlifted to hospital following the incident having initially undergone treatment in the circuit medical centre.
Eurotech has yet to make comment on Smith’s condition, with Motorbase having reported that Davenport had spoken to members of the team whilst being assessed at the circuit before being taken away for further treatment.
