Views differ after controversial Prodrive Racing team-clash

The Prodrive Racing Australia trio of Cameron Waters, Mark Winterbottom and Chaz Mostert clashed in the final race of the Supercars championship weekend at Pukekohe, an incident that unsurprisingly left the trio with differing views.

”It’s good to get on the podium for the team, but obviously there’s a bit of a sour note to it with the Turn 8 incident,” said Waters to supercars.com.

“For me I thought the move was on, I got up to his door and through the brake zone he pushed me to the inside kerb. I thought it was all ok and then obviously Chaz was pretty committed to the corner and it was just a big sandwich. I went and apologised to him… Chaz is fine, he gets it, and Mark is a little upset but they’ll be right, they’ll get over it.”

Mostert was first of the three heading into the turn, with Waters making a late move on the inside of Winterbottom, clashing into him and sending Mostert into a spin.

“We’ll address it at the workshop,” said Winterbottom.

“Chaz is going for the championship, the job’s to protect him a little bit and then you get the other team car dive-bomb us down the inside locked up, turns you into Chaz. It’s not the team role that our team has, but we’ll address it I’m sure and look at onboard footage and that sort of stuff and work it out.”

Waters did not receive a penalty for the incident and finished the race in third while Mostert dropped to seventh, taking a big blow to his title hopes as he is 264 points behind championship leader Jamie Whincup with 300 points left in the season finale.

“I thought there would be a lot of damage,” said Mostert. ”It was a decent hit in the back there, which turned me around, but I got some front contact as well. As my engineer said, I think I was lucky I rolled off the brake when it started to roll backwards, I think the hit was a bit minimal and just pushed me wide.”

“In that last race, it was disappointing to be in a lap one incident that put us back, obviously [on Saturday] struggling with the braking-type stuff I made a balls-up trying to get as many points as I could. Not a very good weekend from a driving point of view for me, also we struggled a bit.”
