Scott McLaughlin charges from 19th to first in final Perth race

Scott McLaughlin made it two from two by winning the final Supercars championship race at Perth, charging from 19th position on the grid to claim victory by close to eight seconds over David Reynolds.

Triple Eight Race Engineering driver Jamie Whincup started from pole position and headed the field in the beginning ahead of a strong starting Chaz Mostert in second place for Tickford Racing.

Garry Rogers Motorsport driver James Golding went off early in the race, forcing the safety car out on track and triggered frantic action in the pits as all drivers bar Will Davison headed for their first stop.

As the race resumed, championship leader McLaughlin was almost caught in an incident where Nick Percat was turned into a spin. The DJR Team Penske driver was able to get through the action and quickly made his way up toward the top.

Erebus Motorsport driver David Reynolds had a strong race and was gaining slightly on McLaughlin toward the end of the race when in second place. McLaughlin was however able to respond and Reynolds had to settle for second, 7.9804 seconds behind.

Craig Lowndes fought his way to the final podium spot in third from the back of the grid with a three-stop strategy, making his way past Nissan driver Andre Heimgartner in the final part of the race.

Shane van Gisbergen was in the lead during the race but lost ground in the first pit stop when he had to double stack behind Whincup to finish fifth. Pole sitter Whincup crossed the line in sixth close to 20 seconds behind race winner McLaughlin.

Percat crossed the line in seventh with Heimgartner as the top Nissan driver in eighth position.

McLaughlin’s fourth straight victory has him in a strong lead of the championship, 158 points ahead of van Gisbergen in second and 168 points ahead of Reynolds in third.
