Jaap van Lagen takes last-gasp pole position at Zandvoort

Team WRT Audi driver Jaap van Lagen has taken pole position for his home race at Zandvoort, snatching back pole position in the dying moments of qualifying from PCR Sport’s Mikel Azcona in the Cupra TCR.

Van Lagen topped the first segment of qualifying, comfortably quickest in the Team WRT Audi RS 3 LMS ahead of Stian Paulsen’s Cupra TCR and the Target Hyundai of Kris Richard.

In the 10-minute second qualifying session however, van Lagen was outpaced on his first lap by just two-hundredths of a second by PCR Sport’s Mikel Azcona, with the Spaniard setting a time of 1:44.980, just over a tenth of a second slower than van Lagen’s time from Q1.

Van Lagen struck back on his final possible run, going four-tenths of a second faster to snatch back pole position from Azcona, who had to settle for second.

Tassi qualified third in the KCMG Honda Civic TCR, with Kris Richard the best-placed of the Hyundais in fourth, just under a second off the pace.

Championship leader Dusan Borkovic was fifth fastest, with Reece Barr making it three Target Competition Hyundais in a row, with Josh Files seventh fastest in his KCMG Honda.

Daniel Nagy was eighth in the M1RA Hyundai ahead of Jens Reno Moller’s Honda, with Danny Kroes completing the top ten in the PCR Sport Cupra, and therefore securing pole for the reversed grid Race 2, ensuring a double Dutch set of poles for Sunday and Monday’s races.

Race 1 is scheduled for 12:20 CET on Sunday, with Race 2 at 14:55 CET on Monday.
