Robert Gilmour excluded for Oulton Park Race 1 crash

DPE Motorsport’s Robert Gilmour has been found responsible for the crash in Race 2 and excluded, with the Scotsman also set to pick up points on his racing licence for “driving in a manner incompatible with general safety.”

The Alfa Romeo driver was caught up in an incident with Maximum Motorsport’s Carl Swift on the second lap of Race 1, heading to Island Bend as tried to pass Swift, following the Volkswagen of Jessica Bäckman through as Swift made an error at Cascades.

The two locked wheels, with Gilmour’s car reportedly turning in on Swift’s, with the two cars careering off into the barriers suffering severe damage.

Both drivers took no further part in the rest of the day’s activities, while the race was suspended behind the red flag for 30 minutes as the Armco barrier was repaired.

“We came out of Cascades and I got a really bad exit, so I was on the right-hand side and Jess got beside me,” said Swift. “And then Rob was right behind Jess but, then came over onto the racing line when I was alongside. I don’t know he’d registered I was there and ran me onto the grass, and then he ran over my front wheel which fired him off into the air and into the fence.”

Gilmour said he didn’t understand how the accident occurred.

“I saw Jessica was on the inside so I thought I’d follow her, and the next thing I know I was just turned around and in the barriers. I have no idea what happened at all. It’s such a shame for the team.”
