Esteban Guerrieri leaves Mexico in points lead: “Nobody wanted to give up”

Esteban Guerrieri heads from the FIA TCR World Tour season opener in Mexico as the points leader and became the second driver ever after Will Brown to claim back-to-back victories in the championship.

“It was a very good race for all of us,” said Guerrieri. “This race was a special one, as I drove one of the best touring cars I remember.”

The GOAT Racing Honda driver claimed pole, climbed back to fourth in Race 1 following a slow start and then won the two remaining races in style, beating Race 1 winner Thed Björk (Lynk & Co) in the final race.

“It was a solid race from the start; I saw Thed (Björk) pushing on the first two laps so I tried to create the gap, but also to avoid a kerb at T8 which I think cut my tyre in Race 2,” said Guerrieri.

“Then the safety car came, and I saw him trying to get close at the stadium section, so I had to push again. Once I got to a 1.5 second gap I could cruise to the chequered flag.

“Nobody wanted to give up, so it was a nice one. It’s really great this day, with this huge crowd, and one of the memories I’ll take with me and remember for a while, so thanks to everyone who made this day very special.”

Guerrieri carries a 12-point lead over Björk heading into round two at Valencia in Spain on June 14-15.
