Broc Feeney wins twice at Symmons Plains to claim points lead
Broc Feeney claimed both victories of the two opening Supercars Championship races at Symmons Plains to claim the points lead.
The first race had Thomas Randle starting from pole position, with the Ford driver heading the field as the lights went out ahead of the Triple Eight duo of Feeney and Will Brown.
Feeney got past Randle in the first part of the race heading into Turn 5 after a couple of previous attempts at the same spot.
As Feeney extended his lead, Randle and Brown headed into the pits at the same time for their stop. But a slow right-front change for Brown saw the Chevrolet driver dropping down to finish fifth.
Feeney won the first race in style, crossing the finishing line close to eight seconds ahead of Randle.
Bryce Fullwood took his Chevrolet Camaro to third place ahead of Cameron Waters and Brown while Ryan Wood rounded off the top six.
Feeney started the second race from pole position ahead of Randle and James Golding.
As the lights went out, Feeney claimed the lead ahead of Randle, while there was an incident further down the field which saw Ryan Wood spinning off track following contact with Aaron Cameron.
Different strategies in the number of tyres changed during the pit stops saw Macauley Jones and Nick Percat emerging ahead of the leading duo of Feeney and Randle.
But Feeney worked his way past both of them, having changed four tyres compared to just two for Jones and Percat.
Feeney won the race in commanding style, 2.6 seconds ahead of Percat while the Tickford Racing duo of Waters and Randle came home in positions three and four.
Jones finished the race in fifth while Golding, who started the race from the front row, claimed sixth place.
Former points leader and reigning champion Brown had a tough race from 13th on the grid to finish 11th.
Feeney heads Waters by 13 points in the drivers’ championship while Brown has dropped to third, 17 points from his team-mate.
Next up for the Supercars Championship field is qualifying for the third race of the weekend, starting at 09:35 local time/01:35 CEST on Sunday.
