Broc Feeney beats Matthew Payne to victory in Wanneroo finale
Broc Feeney claimed his second consecutive Supercars Championship victory in the final race of the weekend at Wanneroo Raceway with Matthew Payne right behind.
The Triple Eight driver started from pole and made a strong start to lead ahead of Cameron Waters who got a slow getaway but still managed to keep second place into Turn 1.
Payne, who started fourth, was first of the leading driver to complete his first pit stop and the Grove Racing driver was to continue to capitalize on his pit stop strategy.
Payne was last of the leading drivers to complete his second pit stop and the Ford driver struck gold as Cooper Murray came to a halt on track to trigger the safety car on lap 64.
Payne completed his final stop during the safety car period, as did James Courtney, with the duo emerging in second and fourth place respectively.
The safety car headed back in with 14 laps left of the race, with Courtney quickly making a move on Ryan Wood to snatch third place.
The move saw Cameron Waters and James Golding sneaking past Wood who then got into a tangle with Golding as he tried to get back past, resulting in both of them going off track.
Wood retired from the race while Golding headed back into the pits for repairs, receiving a drive through penalty for the incident.
Payne was close to Feeney but could not get past as the Triple Eight driver crossed the line six tenths of a second ahead of Payne to claim victory and further extend his championship lead.
Courtney was a happy third place finisher, having started 13th, his first podium for Blanchard Racing Team.
Waters finished fourth ahead of reigning champion Will Brown in fifth and Chaz Mostert in sixth.
Feeney heads the standings on 1181 points, 72 more than team-mate Brown and 123 points ahead of Payne.
The next Supercars Championship round takes place at Hidden Valley on June 20-22.
