Mikel Azcona tops opening FIA TCR World Tour practice at Valencia

Local hero Mikel Azcona set the fastest lap time in the first free practice session held at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia, Spain, host of the second round of the 2025 FIA TCR World Tour.

The BRC Hyundai driver set a best lap time of 1:40.341, followed by his team-mate Néstor Girolami, 0.191 seconds behind.

Ma Qing Hua was third fastest for Lynk & Co Cyan Racing, 0.365 seconds behind Azcona, with series returnee Marco Butti leading the GOAT Racing Hondas in fourth position, a further 24-thousandths of a second behind.

The Lynk & Co contingent formed by Santiago Urrutia, Thed Björk and Yann Ehrlacher followed, with the Frenchman half-a-second from the top time in fifth, with Hyundai’s Norbert Michelisz right behind in sixth.

Ignacio Montenegro finished ninth with the second best time of the Hondas, with guest driver Eric Gené (Cupra) breaking into the top ten in his first FIA TCR World Tour session, 0.795 seconds behind Azcona.

Points leader Esteban Guerrieri could only manage the eleventh fastest time of the session.

“The session went well and the car feels better than in Mexico, but we still have work to do,” Azcona told TouringCarTimes.

The FIA TCR World Tour field returns to the track at 17:00 CEST later today for the second free practice session.
