Broc Feeney wraps up Darwin hat-trick
Broc Feeney wrapped up a dominant weekend at Hidden Valley Raceway with a third win from three in the Darwin finale – having earlier bagged a third pole of the weekend.
The Triple Eight driver made it five successive wins to extend his advantage at the head of the championship standings with another impressive result that saw him control things from the front of the field.
It means he joins Scott McLaughlin in achieving the feat of three wins in a weekend to secure the Darwin Triple Crown.
Despite the best efforts of Jack Le Brocq at the start, Feeney was able to hold onto the lead at the wheel of his Camaro and briefly lost top spot after his stop having been undercut by an early-stopping Matt Payne.
Making the most of fresh tyres to quickly reclaim the lead, Feeney led through to his second stop late on with a perfect stop from the Triple Eight crew allowing him to rejoin at the front as he scored victory by more than eight seconds.
Behind the dominant winner, it would prove to be a strong race for Grove Racing as Kai Allen and Payne made the most of differing strategies to race their way onto the podium.
Allen would run a long first stint which meant he had fresh tyres for the final stint, which enabled him to come through to second spot ahead of Payne, with front-row starter Le Brocq left to settle for fourth.
Defending champion Will Brown enjoyed a more fruitful Sunday as he was able to take fifth having chased Le Brocq to the flag, with a huge battle to the flag between Andre Heimgartner and Anton De Pasquale for sixth.
That would be decided in Heimgartner’s favour as he edged his rival across the line, with Ryan Wood, Cameron Hill and Bryce Fullwood rounding out the top ten.
Chaz Mostert was amongst the drivers to hit issues after being forced to start from the pits before coming through to P12, whilst Cam Waters was 24th and last having lost a wheel with three laps to go – forcing him back into the pits.
Feeney heads the standings with a margin of 183 points over team-mate Brown, with Payne just 14 points further behind in third place.
Townsville 500 is next up for the Supercars field in three weeks time.
