Gordon Shedden: “It’s an incredible feeling – you never tire of it”
Gordon Shedden admitted he had to use all of his experience to secure his and Speedworks Motorsport’s first win of the British Touring Car Championship season at Oulton Park on Sunday.
The three-time champion produced the ultimate race day comeback as, after starting at the back of the grid for race one, Shedden ended the day on the top step of the podium.
Qualifying had seen the Scotsman lose his best lap time due to exceeding track limits which meant he started the opening encounter on the back row. He didn’t stay there long however as he would fight his way to 16th on the hard tyre.
More progress was then to come in race two as Shedden hustled his Toyota Corolla GR Sport machine up to ninth and then got the benefit of the reverse grid draw, meaning he started a damp race three from pole position.
Despite having to contend with multiple safety car periods and an onslaught of pressure from the likes of Jake Hill, Dan Rowbottom and Ash Sutton, the multiple title winner managed to hold on to claim a popular victory.
“It’s an incredible feeling – you never tire of that feeling,” said Shedden. “I had to use all my years of experience to get the job done, and to come out of the last corner on the final lap and see all the team from TOYOTA GAZOO Racing UK with IAA hanging over the pit wall when I came past the chequered flag was just amazing.
“We’ve had our trials and tribulations since the start of the season and they’ve been living the pain and dramas that we all have, so I was delighted for them and it was nice to give everybody a little boost going into the summer break.”
