Broc Feeney rebounds for Townsville success
Broc Feeney bounced back from a difficult Friday sprint outing to secure victory in the first of two 200km races in Townsville, strengthening his position at the head of the Supercars standings.
Fenney had started the race from third on the grid behind David Reynolds and Matt Payne, who grabbed the lead at the start of the race before the safety car was deployed following an incident further back in the pack that ended with James Golding’s car being left stricken on the side of the circuit.
Jack Le Broq had actually jumped Feeney at the start but on the restart, the Triple Eight driver wasted little time in getting ahead into third before chasing down Reynolds to move into second.
Payne was holding the lead when the safety car was called out a second time when the engine on James Courtney’s Mustang let go in spectacular fashion, triggering the first round of pitstops.
During those stops, Feeney was able to jump ahead of Payne into the defacto lead of the race, with race one winner Brodie Kostecki having worked his way through into third and Chaz Mostert having charged up the order from 17th on the grid to sit in fourth.
Mostert took advantage of an error from Kostecki to grab third spot, and pitted for a second time before Payne – meaning his tyres were already up to temperature when his rival stopped despite the WAU man being delayed himself when he changed tyres.
Mostert managed to battle his way ahead of Payne but Feeney was clear up the road and was able to win in relative comfort by mire than six seconds, with Payne just behind him in third spot.
Will Brown overhauled Kostecki during the middle stint of the race to take fourth as he overcame a five second penalty for contact with Will Davison, with Kostecki and Anton De Pasquale rounding out the top six.
Jack Le Broq took seventh ahead of Ryan Wood, who produced an impressive run from the back of the grid to take the flag in eighth – with Cooper Murray and Reynolds rounding out the top ten.
