Broc Feeney doubles up in Townsville
Broc Feeney made it two wins from three in Townsville with victory in the final race of the weekend – moving on to ten wins for the season and moving a step closer to the Supercars Sprint Cup crown.
The Triple Eight driver had qualified on pole for the second of two 200km races and was able to retain his lead at the start ahead of Matt Payne and Anton De Pasquale, who swapped places mid-way through lap one when De Pasquale managed to sneak ahead into second spot.
De Pasquale then briefly attacked Feeney for the lead but couldn’t find a way through, with the Triple Eight driver instead able to start building a gap at the front.
Payne reclaimed second from De Pasquale with Cam Waters in fourth, and he triggered the first round of stops when he came in early – emerging at the front once the stops had cycled through.
However, it didn’t take long for Feeney to quickly made the most of fresh rubber to work his way back to the front, with Will Brown moving up into second having gained ground during the stops.
The Triple Eight duo would remain out front once the second round of stops had been completed, with Feeney able to keep his team-mate at bay to secure a comfortable 1-2 finish for the Chevrolet squad.
Waters would be left to run a long second stint and fell off the podium late on when Chaz Mostert was able to get ahead of him into third spot, but he was unable to challenge the pair ahead – crossing the line nearly ten seconds down on Brown.
Waters had to settle for fourth ahead of Payne and De Pasquale, both of whom faded as the race went on having shown strong pace in the early stages; Payne having also had to deal with an issue when refuelling his car on his first stop that cost him time.
Ryan Wood, Tom Randle, Bryce Fullwood and Kai Allen rounded out the top ten.
Amongst those to endure difficult Sundays were Friday winner Brodie Kostecki back in 16th and David Reynolds – who bagged pole on Saturday but finished a lap down in 21st place having picked up a time penalty for a clash with James Courtney.
A loose wheel for Will Davison saw him forced into an additional stop and left him down in 23rd, with Cameron Hill running inside the top ten until a brake issue resulted in him being forced into a lengthy stop that means he slipped outside the top ten in the standings.
At the front, Feeney now leads Brown by 220 points, with 315 still to play for before the Sprint Cup crown is decided.
