Dan Cammish conquers late rain shower to win race two
Dan Cammish reigned supreme in race two of the British Touring Car Championship at Donington Park whilst there was high drama in the battle for the title.
The Alliance Racing driver managed to stay out of trouble to rise from fifth to first and with it, claim his second win of the year ahead of Adam Morgan and Gordon Shedden.
Race one winner Tom Chilton started the contest from pole position and had built up a healthy advantage on the opening lap before the safety car made an appearance following an incident at McLeans including Senna Proctor, Sam Osborne and Aiden Moffat.
On the restart, Ingram moved to the inside of Chilton on the run down to Redgate to take the lead however it was Ash Sutton behind them that found himself in strife as contact at the rear of his Ford Focus pitched him sideways.
That slide resulted in Sutton and Chilton – who had to avoid the four-time champion – both tumbling down the order. Cammish meanwhile managed to steer clear of the drama and moved up to second.
Running the preferred medium compound tyre, Cammish quickly found a way past Ingram and marked his 200th race in the UK’s premier motorsport series by triumphing.
It wasn’t further drama however as in the closing laps a heavy rain shower hit the circuit which sent almost the entire field into the gravel at McLeans. Cammish would manage to rejoin and would take the chequered flag behind the safety car.
Morgan would also hold on to claim yet another podium while the big winner was the Speedworks Toyota of Shedden who gained a number of positions to complete the podium.
Restart Racing’s Chris Smiley had been in the thick of the action earlier on but fought his way back up to fourth ahead of championship leader Ingram.
West Surrey Racing’s Daryl DeLeon had been challenging for the podium positions in the opening exchanges ultimately settled for sixth. Hot on his heels was the charging Josh Cook who went from the rear of the field to seventh.
After his earlier travails, Sutton recovered to finish behind Aron Taylor-Smith in ninth with reigning champion Jake Hill completing the top ten.
Race three is scheduled to start at 16:55.
