Mikel Azcona tops opening practice at Macau
BRC Hyundai N Squadra Corse driver Mikel Azcona was the fastest driver around the Guia circuit in Macau, host of the eighth and final round of the 2025 FIA TCR World Tour, in Thursday’s first free practice session.
GOAT Racing’s Esteban Guerrieri (Honda) caused a temporary yellow flag at the beginning of the session after spinning, with the Argentinian driver able to recover and continue.
The session was red-flagged half-way through as Wen-Yao Liang (Hyundai) crashed against the barriers at Melco.
Azcona and Lynk & Co’s Yann Ehrlacher fought for the top spot in the final moments of the session, with Azcona prevailing with a lap time of 2:28.244, 1.266 seconds ahead of the Frenchman.
Hyundai’s Norbert Michelisz was third, 1.393 seconds behind his team-mate, with Guerrieri right behind, 1.804 seconds off the pace.
Néstor Girolami completed a competitive first session for Hyundai in fifth place, two seconds adrift, followed by the Lynk & Co’s of Santiago Urrutia, Thed Björk and Ma Qing Hua, with the Chinese driver 3.273 seconds off the pace.
Pepe Oriola (Honda) made a competitive one-off return to competition in ninth position, with Lo Sze Ho (Hyundai) completing the top ten, 4.153 seconds behind Azcona.
The second free practice session is scheduled for 14:20 local time (07:20 CET).
