Supercars performs wind tunnel testing with Chevrolet, Ford and Toyota
The Supercars Championship homologation team has completed wind tunnel testing in the USA with the Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang and Toyota Supra models ahead of the 2026 season.
The tests have been completed at the Windshear facility in North Carolina, testing and adjusting any aerodynamic differences between the three models.
Representatives from the three homologation teams Triple Eight (Ford), Team 18 (General Motors) and Walkinshaw Andretti United (Toyota) are on site.
“The Camaro has come out and it won’t go back in. It’s done what it needed to do — it set the benchmark. Then, the others have to match that,” said Supercars Chief Motorsport Officer Tim Edwards to Supercars.com.
“There shouldn’t be much to do with the Ford. We’ve made a couple of changes to that car where there are differences in areas where you don’t see. On that, we’re inducing some of the workload on the Ford by asking them to make some changes to make their car similar to the Camaro.
“For example, the front under tray is slightly different between the cars. While they’re balanced at the moment, the ideal scenario is if we can find a way of tuning to have the same under tray across all cars. So, we’ve asked all homologation teams to come with different parts, so we can tune the cars with different parts.”
There will be some changes made to the Toyota Supra after the tests which included speeds between 200 to 300 km/h.
“As we moved through CFD, Toyota had already committed to certain changes,” said Edwards.
“For example, the front facia will be different to what’s been seen. It does have some noticeably different styling cues to it, because we needed to change it for the results we saw from the CFD.
“The Toyota will look a bit different to people when they actually see the race-ready version of it.”
