Broc Feeney secures early Supercars advantage with Sydney double
Broc Feeney holds the early lead in the Supercars standings after the Triple Eight driver bagged two wins from three in the season opener in Sydney.
On the weekend that the multiple champions returned to Ford, Feeney won the first and third races either side of a race two success for Anton De Pasquale, putting him top of the standings ahead of Matt Payne on countback.
James Golding had sprung a surprise by bagging the first pole of the season as the Blanchard Racing Team locked out the front-row of the grid for race one, but it was Feeney who emerged out front in the race having benefitted from the undercut during the pitstops.
That allowed him to rejoin in the defacto lead of the race when Aaron Cameron – who had jumped Golding off the line – came in for his stop, and Feeney sailed home to comfortable win from there as the two BRT cars followed home to round out the podium.
De Pasquale was the only non-Ford driver in the six as he took the flag in sixth, with Andre Heimgartner in eighth proving to be the best Toyota on the first race for the GR Supra.
Race two of the weekend was won by polesitter De Pasquale for Team 18 after a huge battle with Brodie Kostecki.
De Pasquale led most of the race but found himself under pressure from Kostecki late on after the former champion elected to pit later and then had fresher tyres for the run to the flag – chasing down his rival as he worked his way through the field but ending up less than a second shy of victory.
Payne rounded out the podium in third, with the top three well clear of the pack behind. Race one winner Feeney was back in sixth after a time penalty for an unsafe release, whilst only Ryan Wood in seventh made it into the top ten for Toyota.
Defending champion Chaz Mostert was excluded for a technical infringement, as two of the wheels on his new Toyota Super did not have sensors mounted.
Feeney then made it two wins from the weekend in the finale despite the failure of his cool suit leaving him battling difficult conditions inside his Mustang, with Payne and Kai Allen both keeping him honest throughout.
Payne would end up second after Allen was forced to pit with a wheel issue, whilst Cam Waters took third.
Fourth for Mostert was the best result of the weekend for Toyota.
Feeney heads the standings on 259 points together with Payne, while Waters is third on 238 and De Pasquale is fourth on 197.
The next Supercars Championship race takes place at Albert Park on March 6-8.
