STCC to relaunch in 2027 as GT series

The STCC is to be relaunched in 2027 but will no longer run as a touring car series after the decision was taken to switch to GT4 regulations.

First launched in 1996 as the Swedish Touring Car Championship before being reborn in 2011 to cover the whole Scandinavian region, the STCC most recently operated in 2024 running all-electric touring cars before the promoter closed down operations in 2025.

With no new promoter found, the 2025 season was postponed before a hoped for return in 2026 also failed to materialise.

Now however, an ownership group comprising of Gelleråsen Arena, Mantorp Park, Ring Knutstorp and Ljungbyhed Circuit has announced that the STCC will return as a GT series next year.

“The level of interest in the return of the STCC has exceeded our expectations, and with a strong ownership group and a long-term plan in place, we feel confident about the future,” Richard Göransson, representative of the ownership group, five-time STCC champion and CEO of Gelleråsen Arena, said.

“We have been working on the project behind the scenes for more than a year, and several teams have already confirmed their entry for 2027.

“With GT4, we are filling a major gap in Swedish motorsport by creating a championship with multiple brands competing against each other, cost-efficient racing and a clear route to the international stage for young talents.”

The decision to move to GT4 regulations will see the STCC work in partnership with SRO, the group behind the successful ruleset.

“GT4 is a category that attracts both young professional talents and experienced, established drivers at national and international level. We see great potential for the concept together with STCC in Sweden and across the Nordic region.”

Drivers, teams, partners, the sporting format and the complete calendar for the inaugural 2027 season will be announced in due course, with the group confirming that events will be held at more than just the four circuits behind the rebirth next year.
