René Münnich given penalty for contact with Sergey Afanasyev

WestCoast Racing’s René Münnich was given a retrospective drive-through penalty for an incident with Team Craft-Bamboo Lukoil driver Sergey Afanasyev on the penultimate lap of today’s second race in Shanghai.

The German driver who’d had a strong second place finish in the first race of the weekend yesterday, had spun early on in race two and was fighting at the back of the pack, making contact with Afanasyev which also caught up Zengo Motorsport’s Norbert Toth in the incident. Although Münnich only went on to finish in 13th, failing to benefit from the move, the 30 second penalty drops the Honda driver one position further to 14th and last behind the Campos Racing SEAT of Ukrainian Igor Skuz.

Münnich is set to miss the next round in Valencia as it clashes with the second round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship, in which his Audi-equipped squad is competing this season.
