“Mega” weekend tempts Adam Morgan to more historic racing

Adam Morgan described his first experience of the Silverstone Classic as “mega” and hopes to be able to make more appearances at similar events in future.

The Ciceley Racing BTCC driver made his debut at one of the world’s largest historic race meetings in the Super Touring Car Trophy races, taking Ric Wood’s Mazda 323 to 17th in the first race, before retiring with mechanical issues in race two behind the wheel of Darren Fielding’s BMW 318.

“Mega fun, absolutely mega,” Morgan told TouringCarTimes after Saturday’s race. “I was in the Mazda front wheel drive so it’s back to what I know [after driving the BMW in qualifying]. But it’s still completely different, it’s chalk and cheese.”

The two cars that Morgan took were two completely different beasts, going from the front-wheel-drive rare Mazda 323 that never made it to race action in the BTCC, to the more well known rear-wheel-drive BMW 318, but it was a challenge the BTCC race-winner was relishing.

“[The Mazda]’s got very little torque,” continued Morgan. “It’s on a standard rack, a standard steering column, the movement in the steering wheel is huge. You turn right and nothing happens until you basically put a full lock of turn on, it’s a funny thing, but it’s back in one piece. It’s not my car, so I’m happy to have it back safe, I loved every minute of it.”

“I’m back in the BM for Sunday, I think they had a problem in race one. I think the throttle cable snapped, it should be back out tomorrow. I haven’t done rear wheel drive for a few years now but it’ll be good fun to get a few powerslides going.”

Morgan is now hoping to make more appearances in historic racing, having enjoyed his first experience of the Silverstone Classic, despite less than perfect conditions on Friday and Sunday.

“I really want to come back and do some more, I absolutely love it,” said Morgan. “I’ve never done anything like this before and if I could just keep getting the odd drive now and then I’d be mega happy.”
