Stewart Whyte secures in-house championship with win

Stewart Whyte was delighted to win the opening race of the Super Touring Car Trophy at Rockingham and wrap up the in-house championship in the process.

Whyte started the 20 minute lap race from pole position, but found himself skipping through the gravel trap at Tarzan on the second lap, dropping to third and having to work his way past both Patrick Watts and John Cleland for the win.

“I think I’ll get a bollocking from the team when I go back for going through the gravel trap, making it a bit harder than it should’ve been,” said Whyte. “I just made a mess of it, I thought I was braking at the same point as before but it just locked up and away I went. I was actually lucky to make it out the gravel.”

Although there’s no official championship for the series, victory today has seen Whyte take the in-house championship, taking the title off reigning champion James Dodd, whose Honda Accord once again struggled with reliability issues.

“After the gravel trip I had to really go for it,” continued Whyte. “I had to make sure I passed these two [Cleland and Watts] to get the full points to secure the title. It was a really good race, I enjoyed it.”
