Roberto Colciago closes in on title lead after tough Monza race

M1RA’s Roberto Colciago led from the start to score his second victory in the TCR Series this season at Monza, but the race was far from easy for the Italian.

Colciago is racing at home, as he lives close to the track. However, the Italian is facing health issues this weekend: “I’m in a lot of pain because of a bad back. So yes, my family and fans are here and giving me a lot of support, but when I have to get in the car it’s difficult,” Colciago said to TouringCarTimes.

The Honda driver qualified second on the grid, but was leading the race at the first chicane: “I made a good start and was able to get in the lead, but the race was very difficult as, because of the tow, it was impossible to get away. Attila was pressing me, which is good for the team. I was better today, but racing can be difficult in these circumstances.”

The result doesn’t come as a surprise for Roberto Colciago, who is confident in the package in his hands: “The car is strong and fast on the straights, and it’s very good allroud. Despite being a new team, it’s very professional. I’m not surprised we are doing well, as we are working in the right direction.”

The Italian is the first driver this season to repeat victory, after winning Race 1 in Bahrain. Still, Colciago believes the championship fight will be a tough one for him: “The TCR Series is very competitive, because the cars are similar, so the main thing is to avoid making mistakes. Plus, when ballast is added, even if only 10kg, it changes the behaviour of the car, so one race you are ahead and the next you are nowhere.”

Roberto Colciago now lies second in the standings with 79 points, with Team WRT’s Jean-Karl Vernay 24 points ahead on 103.
