KMS Audi on the way back
Tommy Kristoffersson claims that Kristoffersson Motorsport (KMS) have been “off” for a few years. But this year things have turned and the team is on the way to be the best overall.
“It has gone fantastically well this year,” Kristoffersson said.
Tommy Kristoffersson is one of the drivers and entrepreneurs in STCC. He has been in the championship since 1998 when his team KMS started a co-operation with Audi. Since then there have been four golds in the drivers championship, last time with Fredrik Ekblom in 2003. Since then things have gone a bit down and the reigning champions were defeated by West Coast Racing in 2004.
This year it is a totally different story. A nine points lead in the drivers championship thanks to Thed Björk and six points ahead of Flash Engineering in the team/manufacturers championship.
“We are not far from completing one of the best STCC-seasons ever,” Kristoffersson said.
Kristoffersson is ninth in the drivers championship but is focusing on the team, Audi and the “new STCC”.
“We have a clear and structured three year plan for the team and we know that the STCC organisation also have. We had a though challenge with the “new STCC” during the spring when we fought for TV audience and spectators against a very strongly promoted football world championship,” Kristoffersson said and continued:
“But if we are looking at the statistics we can see that we have increased the number of viewers by ten times on TV in a channel that everyone can access. We have one of europes strongest fields and it is really fun to work with STCC as base this year.”
The co-operation between KMS and Audi has grown stronger through the years.
“KMS have together with Audi Sweden through a determined and stubborn work managed to get the championship both to the Audi factory and Audosport in Ingolstadt. Audi Sweden has since 1998, when we started, drastically increased their sale of cars, especially of the sportier versions.”
The philosophy within the team is simple – This year three drivers are in the team, two who are focusing on racing only, Björk and Ekblom, with Kristoffersson beside them. The strategy for them are like the three musketeers, all for one.
“The main goal has always been for the team to win, not who in the team that is going to win.”
For your own part, Tommy, how do you look back on your season?
“I have managed with one of my two personal goals – To qualify well, I have until now qualified to super pole in six out of eight races. Only Ekblom, Göransson and Björk have a better result.
“I must admit that I take great joy in being able to compete in this championship for Audi. To be able to compete in absolute top level in Swedish motorsport with super strong opponents, having the opportunity with a team to take the maximal out of a race car. To hear the Swedish national anthem and feel the adrenaline, that is for me an incredible feeling which somehow fills some of the space for the long wanted but still missing podium finish that we of course hope will come at the final race.”
