Tommy Rustad heads Volvo’s title fight

Tommy Rustad has emerged as the title contender for Volvo in the Swedish Touring Car Championship 2009. The Norwegian had another solid weekend at Falkenberg with one pole, one victory and one second place.
“It was a real dream scenario! It is always nice to start first and then just pull away from everyone,” said Rustad.

Rustad scored 18 points at Falkenberg, meaning that he closed in on championship leader Thed Björk with four points, reducing the gap to just two points.

Rustad had a hard fight with Björk in the second race. Rustad was first passed by Björk when Rustad tried to pass Roger Eriksson.

But a couple of laps later Rustad made a stunning move on the out side of Björk.

“I took a chance on the outside in the first corner which worked well. It was great to get a second place,” said Rustad.

While Rustad enjoyed an almost perfect weekend, things were the other way around for his team mate Robert Dahlgren.

Dahlgren was second in the first race behind Rustad when his engine failed and the team was unable to get him out to the second race, meaning zero points for the Swede.

While the rest of the STCC teams are heading for the summer break, the Volvo team is heading to Brands Hatch in the UK for a World Touring Car Championship weekend.
