Rickard Rydell closing in on championship lead
Defending champion Rickard Rydell took a chunk out of Johan Kristoffersson’s points lead of the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship at Knutstorp.
“Knutstorp meant important points for the championship and it feels good to have gained a big part of Kristoffersson’s lead,” said Rydell.
The Chevrolet driver scored a win and a second place at Knutstorp, with Kristofferson behind him in both races. The victory was the first of the season for Rydell.
“It was great to take the first win of the year at Knutstorp. This track suited us better than Mantorp, but it wasn’t an easy victory, I had to push hard,” said Rydell.
Rydell gained ten points on Kristoffersson, reducing the gap in the championship to just four points. The teams’ championship is the other way around with Chevrolet in the lead ahead of Volkswagen, much thanks to the double victory in the final race at Knutstorp where team mate Michel Nykjaer won ahead of Rydell.
“I had a strong pace in the start of the race and I was pushing Michel, being ready if he was to do a mistake. But he drove really well and I didn’t take any risks to get past, there is no point in risking going off track in a battle with a team mate. The double victory was really well-deserved if you ask me,” said Rydell.
STCC continues at Sturup Raceway in three weeks.
