Super Touring grid to be redrawn after troubled qualifying
The grid for the first Super Touring race at the Silverstone Classic will be redrawn after qualifying took place entirely behind the safety car.
Poor weather at the Northamptonshire circuit meant that the mammoth field of historic touring cars were unable to put any competitive laps on the board. As a result of some drivers pitting and catching up back to the tail of the safety car train, the grid was an incredibly mixed up affair, with a Jaguar XJS provisionally on the front row.
A number of drivers appeared slightly frustrated at the safety car, believing they should have been allowed to set at least one competitive time to set a grid, while some believed the circuit felt similar to the conditions they qualified in at Donington Park earlier in the year.
However, all drivers accepted the decision was best to ensure that there were no incidents with their machinery, be it through aquaplaning or another car dropping oil, with a couple of entrants pulling off to the side of the circuit with mechanical problems, in the treacherous conditions.
With no green flag running in the twenty minute session at all, the organisers have decided they will draw up a grid, although TouringCarTimes has had no official word on how the grid will be drawn, we believe it will be based on either class, championship points or previous experience, or a mix of the three.
The weather forecast is more positive for Saturday’s race, with sun and cloud set to cover the Silverstone circuit, while, more worryingly, Sunday appears to be a carbon copy of Friday’s conditions, with heavy rain forecast for the majority of the day.
