Sunny Wong and Alex Hui on top after great first weekend in China

Teamwork Motorsport’s Sunny Wong and Alex Hui both lead the TCR China Touring Car Championship after a strong first weekend at Zhuhai, with a podium each in the two sprint races, followed by a victory in the one-hour endurance race.

While the team’s Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR couldn’t beat the MacPro Racing Honda Civic TCR in the two sprint races, the correct strategic call in Race 3 played into their hands, as the team opted to change tyres during their pit stop, with Wong blasting up to catch race leader Henry Ho’s Honda who hadn’t changed tyres to take away the lead. Ho then stopped a few laps from the end with a puncture, which lost the team key points and ultimately the points lead.

“Today’s win was a good example of teamwork,” said Sunny Wong. “During Alex’s stint he was feeding back how the tyres and the car was handling so that before I got into the car I’d have some understanding of how the car and tyres would behave.

“After the stop, I just kept driving until I could see the leader getting closer. Our engineer told me I was quicker every lap so I just kept pushing and with six laps to go I passed the leading car.”

Co-driver Alex Hui added:

“This weekend was a little bit harder for us than last year because we’re currently running just one car, so it’s harder to work on the set-up or try different things. In each qualifying and each race we were experimenting, so by the end of weekend we are quite satisfied with our pace. We weren’t the fastest, but our approach and tyres choices made us consistent and reliable.”
