Kelly Racing confirm multi-car TCR programme

Kelly Racing has become the second Supercars outfit to confirm that will also compete in the new TCR Australia Series this season.

The team, which currently runs the now ex-factory Nissan programme in Supercars, will field a four-car outfit as it makes its first foray into TCR competition having.

Two Subaru WRX STI TCRs have been ordered from Top Run Motorsport and will run alongside a pair of Opel Astra TCRs that will arrive from Lubner Motorsport.

All four cars are due to arrive in Australia in the coming weeks with a testing planned ahead of the opening rounds of the season in Sydney in mid-May.

No drivers have yet been confirmed for any of the four cars although Australian Rally champion Molly Taylor has previously expressed an interest in trying to put together a programme to run a Subaru in the series.

Taylor is contracted to Subaru for her 2019 Australian Rally Championship programme, and tested the TCR car when invited to Italy by Top Run late last year.

“It is very exciting to add to the TCR Series cars to our racing program for 2019 and beyond,” Kelly Racing owner Todd Kelly said. “We’ve been keeping an eye on the developments of the category, both here in Australia and around the world, and with the resources and skill-base we have at Kelly Racing, it was a logical fit for us.

“The Opel Astra is a proven race-winning car in other championships. With the right driver line-up, there’s no reason why they will not be competitive straight away.

“It’s going to be great to have the Subarus as well. I feel they are going to suit the Australian conditions and circuits as its one of only two sedan shapes in the field, up against the hot hatches.

“The WRX is a very iconic racing vehicle too. It’s going to be very popular amongst the fans of Australian touring car racing.

“Now that we have secured the cars, we will make our announcements around drivers and partners in the near future.”
