Johnny Vejlebo plans motorsport comeback with TCR Denmark

Former DTC and Peugeot Spider Cup driver Johnny Vejlebo is set to end a ten year hiatus from racing when he joins the TCR Denmark grid with a Peugeot 308TCR this season.

Vejlebo, a long-time Peugeot dealer, has been keen on returning to the racetrack for some time, but had been struggling to find an appropriate championship to join.

“I’ve been missing motorsport for a lot of years, but I could not see myself in any of the championships available. Then this [TCR Denmark] appeared and seemed exciting – and I signed up for it,” said Vejlebo, who was convinced when fellow Peugeot dealer, Michael Carlsen, announced his comeback earlier this year.

“When Michael announced his decision to join the championship, I knew the time was now. The car is on its way home, but I have no expectations at all; I haven’t seen or sat in the car yet. But I have been missing going to the races, and this is an opportunity that I am very excited about.”

Vejlebo will join the TCR Denmark Trofeo championship, which is exclusively for drivers over 40 years of age – and a key reason why Vejlebo elected to return.

“The Trofeo championship is definitely going to be a blast,” he said. “I can’t wait to come back and meet some of the drivers I have been racing against through the years. This makes it so much more fun. I’ve been away from the sport for quite some time, and it will be good to see the friends from back then again.”

Vejlebo competed in the DTC championship from 1999 to 2002 in a Peugeot 306 GTI. Before retiring from motorsport, he co-founded the Danish Peugeot Spider Cup championship, in which he raced himself for two seasons.
