STARD named as STCC battery provider

Stohl Advanced Research and Development (STARD) has been named as the company that will provide the batteries that will be used when the STCC moves into the electrified era in 2023.

The Austrian company has a long history of working with EV powertrains, having been behind the first electric rally/rallycross development car and the 2000hp Ford Pro Electric SuperVan concept car.

STARD will now work alongside EPWR – the R&D division of the PWR Group – on the integration of the new battery systems into the 550hp cars being engineered for the first STCC season under electric power.

“STARD, with its vast experience of electrified motorsport and the high-performance battery, is a perfect match for EPWR and our project of electrifying regional touring car racing, starting with the STCC in 2023,” Janne Ljungberg of EPWR said.

“Our co-operation will revolve around the batteries and technology connected to it. We are confident of productive cooperation as we take an exciting and critical leap forward for regional motorsport around the globe in a sustainable way.”

STARD CEO Michael Sakowicz said the company was thrilled to have been chosen to work on the new concept.

“We are delighted to start an extensive cooperation with EPWR around their exciting electrification of regional touring car racing,” he said.

“Electric race cars are the future of motorsport, and we have no doubt that our experience and technology can add to the impressive EPWR project. We look forward to working closely together and providing onsite technical support during the STCC race weekends.”

Cars including the Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4 are set to compete in the STCC next year, with EPWR hard at work on the first cars.

“EPWR and STARD’s innovative technology will enable a historic step forward for STCC with the electrification of the championship until 2023,” series CEO Micke Bern said. “This is a crucial piece of the puzzle that is in place in the intensive work that is going on ahead of the coming season.

“We look forward to working closely with EPWR and STARD, both before and during 2023, the most important season in STCC’s history.”
