Mikel Azcona: “It could not be worse”

The BRC Hyundai team endured a disastrous first FIA TCR World Tour qualifying session in Mexico, with all three drivers being eliminated following the Q1 session.

Reigning champion Norbert Michelisz will start the first race in 13th place, Néstor Girolami 15th and Mikel Azcona 19th.

“Well, to be honest, it could not be worse,” said Azcona to the official broadcast.

The Spaniard was not only off pace like his team-mates, but suffered two technical issues during the session.

“I had engine problems, I had no turbo, so apparently some technical problem was there. We tried to fix it, but we couldn’t,” said Azcona.

“Then a second problem appeared, the front roll-bar was broken. To start the season like that, to be honest, is the worst way. I had a great feeling yesterday and I was approaching qualifying with a good confidence mood.

“But (I’m) very, very disappointed to have two technical problems in qualifying, you cannot start a world championship like that.”
