Mikel Azcona hit with grid penalty after Race 3 incident

Hyundai driver Mikel Azcona has been given a grid penalty for an incident with reigning TCR Mexico champion Julio Rejón during the third and final race of the FIA TCR World Tour opener in Mexico City.

The two came together at Turn 4 on the opening lap, resulting in Rejón (Cupra) dropping several positions and Azcona having to pit for repairs.

Azcona finished the race in 22nd position, a lap down on the leaders, underlining the nightmare weekend for the BRC Hyundai squad.

The Spaniard will drop three places on the grid in the next race that he takes part in and has been handed his first penalty point of 2025.

“Race 3 was a bit disappointing because my car was damaged by contact on the first lap,” said Azcona.

“I was able to bring the car to the box and my mechanics did a super job to fix the car in a very short time and I scored points, which is a positive. To be honest it was a very hard week for us as a team but at least we take some info for the future and we’re going to come back much, much stronger.”

Team-mate Norbert Michelisz was handed a five-second penalty and one penalty point after Race 2 for an incident with Juan Pablo Sierra, dropping him from 16th to 17th place in the race.
