Gordon Shedden holds off Ash Sutton and Tom Ingram to win Snetterton finale
Gordon Shedden produced a defensive masterclass to hold off Ash Sutton and win the final British Touring Car Championship racer of the weekend at Snetterton.
Starting from pole position, the MB Motorsport driver was wheel-perfect as he soaked up a torrent of pressure to claim his first win of the season ahead of fellow champions Sutton and Tom Ingram.
The Plato Racing Mercedes’ of Dan Rowbottom and Adam Morgan were the first to challenge Shedden however all eyes soon became fixed on Sutton and Ingram as they battled their way through the order.
Championship leader Sutton was the first to reach the rear of Shedden’s Toyota and the Alliance Racing driver made several attempts to claim top spot, however the Scotsman closed the door at every opportunity.
Further back, Ingram – who had charged from dead last on the grid – soon inserted himself into the race for the lead as he began to challenge Sutton. Their wheel-to-wheel battle allowed Shedden the breathing space he needed to claim famous triumph.
Sutton would resist the late charge from Ingram to snare second, leaving the EXCELR8 driver to complete the podium in third.
WSR’s Daryl De Leon was another driver on the move as he carved his way from tenth on the grid ton finish fourth ahead of Chris Smiley, who recorded his and Restart Racing’s best finish of the season.
Race one winner Charles Rainford was sixth ahead of Morgan, Tom Chiltion, Dan Cammish and Rowbottom who completed the top ten.
The next BTCC race takes place at Oulton Park on June 6-7.
