Lewis Gilbert ‘completely fine’ after scary barrel roll crash

Lewis Gilbert thankfully walked away from Donington Park unhurt this past weekend following a scary accident that saw his WSR BMW barrel roll in the opening British Touring Car Championship contest.

The Scotsman had been fighting towards the back of the field on the opening lap of race one when contact from Tom Chilton on the right rear corner on the approach to the Melbourne Loop speared him into the barrier.

After impacting the armco, Gilbert’s rear-wheel-drive machine then dug into the grass before barrel rolling and coming to a halt.

Gilbert was given the all-clear by the TOCA Medical Team however unsurprisingly his day was cut short, with there being too much damage to repair at the track for the Bavarian squad.

“There’s not that much to say,” said Gilbert. “My weekend ended before it really got started! I was tagged from behind which sent me into the wall on the run to the Melbourne Hairpin and it resulted in a big accident.

“I’m very thankful to WSR and BMW for building such a strong car. I feel completely fine. I’m just sad for the team because there is a lot of work to do to repair the car. I’m looking forward to going to Croft and going racing again.”
