Jamie Whincup claims first American V8 Supercars victory

Jamie Whincup became claimed the first ever V8 Supercars victory on American soil in the first race of the weekend at Austin. The Holden driver claimed the lead on the first lap from pole sitter Fabian Coulthard and kept the lead for all 27 laps.

Red Bull team mate Craig Lowndes fought his way past Coulthard five laps later and started to gain on Whincup. Less than one second separated the both over the finishing line as Lowndes had to settle for second.

Coulthard dropped back to finish eight second behind in third ahead of to Ford driver in the form of Will Davison in fourth.

Davison’s Ford Performance Racing team mate Mark Winterbottom was further up the field in the first part of the race, but made a mistake and dropped down to eight behind Garth Tander in fifth, Rick Kelly in sixth, Nissan’s best result so far, and Jonathon Webb in seventh.

James Courtney and David Wall rounded off the top ten.
