Toyota drivers Mostert and Heimgartner claim Tasmania wins

Toyota Supra drivers Chaz Mostert and Andre Heimgartner claimed the first two Supercars Championship wins of the weekend at Symmons Plains in Tasmania.

Walkinshaw TWG Racing driver Mostert started the first race from pole position but was beaten into turn one by Chevrolet driver Anton De Pasquale.

But Mostert was able to reclaim the lead at the end of lap two with some contact which enabled De Pasquale’s Team 18 team-mate David Reynolds to get past for second as well.

De Pasquale continued to drop down the order to ultimately finish sixth.

Triple Eight driver Broc Feeney was on the move late in the race after opting to change four tyres during his final pit stop, snatching fourth place from Heimgartner and gained quickly on Brodie Kostecki in the fight for third.

But Kostecki was able to only just stay ahead to claim the final podium spot.

Mostert took his first win for Toyota, more than five seconds ahead of Reynolds.

Brad Jones Racing driver Heimgartner started the second race from pole position and held the lead as the lights went out while Matthew Payne lost second place to Feeney.

Ford Mustang driver Feeney then put hard pressure on Heimgartner for the lead during the first part of the race.

Disaster struck Race 1 winner Mostert who made contact with Jayden Ojeda, resulting in a spin for Ojeda and a 15-second penalty for Mostert who dropped down to finish 19th.

Kostecki was also a driver to hit trouble in Race 2 as he was hit from behind by Reynolds at mid-point of the race, sending Kostecki into the back of Ryan Wood.

The incident forced Kostecki to pit for repairs and dropped down to finish last while Reynolds was handed a 15-second penalty.

Heimgartner controlled the race at the front, winning the race by close to four seconds ahead of Feeney and eight seconds ahead of Payne.

Feeney’s Triple Eight team-mate Will Brown came home in fourth ahead of De Pasquale and Kai Allen.

The third race of the weekend starts at 14:45 local time/06:45 CEST on Sunday.
