Tander & Davison win the Bathurst 1000km

Garth Tander and Will Davison have won the Bathurst 1000km race, after a dash to the flag finish brought about from a late safety car – and put an end to Team Vodafone & Ford’s winning streak at the famous circuit.

Cameron McConville & Jason Richards finished second for Team BOC, and Lee Holdsworth and Michael Caruso third to secure an all Holden podium.

After rain has caused mayhem in the middle part of the race, and various spins and crashes had bought cars to the front and just as easily put them in the mid pack as various strategies were affected – the Holden Racing Team #2 Commodore was never too far from the front of the race.

An early penalty for Craig Lowndes after an unsafe release in his first pit stop on lap 6 meant the Triple Eight Race Engineering car of Lowndes and Whincup was fighting to get back up front.

In the last few moments of the race, a last minute safety car meant there was a three lap dash to the chequered flag – Rick Kelly who was in second, was passed by Jason Richards, and then subsequently the following pack – as a resurgent Greg Murphy, sharing the car with Mark Skaife – who looked set for a victory earlier in the race until their strategy was disrupted with an earlier safety car – fought hard with the GRM car of Lee Holdsworth – resulting in a collosal scrap at the end of this 7 hour race – crossing the start line only 4 thousandths of a second behind.

For international competitors, Triple World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx, shared with David Reynolds – finished 12th only 12.9 seconds down on the race leader.

James Thompson and Allan Simonson retired with only a handful of laps to go, and Nathan Pretty sharing with GT racer Ben Collins crashed near the end, for the car to be repaired and finish five laps down in 20th.

Holden have conquered the mountain, with nine of the top 10 cars.

More reaction from Bathurst to follow.
