Sunny Wong wins the final sprint race of 2017 at Guangdong

Sunny Wong has won the last sprint race of the 2017 TCR China season in a dramatic second race at the Guangdong International Circuit, battling to finish ahead of the two NewFaster Audi RS 3s to take his second win of the year in the Teamwork Motorsport Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR.

Wong started on the front row just behind pole-sitter and Race 1 winner Andy Yan’s Audi RS 3, but lost ground at the start and was passed by Huang Chu Han’s Audi, who moved into the lead, with the blue and yellow Audis running 1-2 in the early stages.

On the second lap, Huang had a small technical problem which gave Wong the chance to attack the two Audis, passing Yan’s RS 3 for second at Turn 7.

The two Teamwork Volkswagens were now second and fourth, with Alex Hui right with Yan, and hounded their opponents throughout the race.

Hui passed Yan on the penultimate lap to move up to third, while Huang’s ongoing technical issue allowed Wong to make a race-winning pass on the final lap and move into the lead.

Hui lost out on the podium however after a last-lap attack from Yan at the final corner saw the champion elect steal back third by just 24-thousandths of a second.

The final race of the weekend is the one-hour endurance race, which starts at 13:05 CST, with the aggregate of the best laps from the two sprint races setting the grid.
