Dusan Borkovic braced for aggressive defense in second Monza race

Dusan Borkovic finished the first race of the weekend at Monza, Italy, in fifth. This put the Target Competition driver 10 points behind title rival Mikel Azcona, who came second in his Cupra. Borkovic is ready to make his Hyundai i30 N TCR as wide as possible in the second race.

“Many drivers cut the first chicane, and I will do the same today as the stewards were okay with this,” said the Serbian to TouringCarTimes. “I expected even worse than fifth on this circuit, maybe I can finish in front of Azcona in Race 2, and I surely won’t let anyone pass me easily. I have to be aggressive while defending. I think I will have a chance until the last race, I want to win this and I want to do it honestly.”

Borkovic still thinks that scoring a good result at Monza could be not enough to clinch the title, as he expects Azcona to make full use of his home track advantage at the season finale in Barcelona.

“I think that even if I manage to have a good result here we still have Barcelona to do. It won’t be easy there, but we will lose weight as we are quite slow here, that could help but it’s Mikel Azcona’s home race, he knows how to drive and how to set up the car, for sure he will be the quickest driver even if he doesn’t have the fastest car.”

The Serbian believes that the balance of performance is affected by the use of different types of tracks in other TCR series, which makes the balance more effective on twisty tracks.

“Surely the balance of performance is also affected by the fact that a lot of different TCR championships race on different tracks compared to ours, we have a lot of fast and flowing tracks. If you think about STCC and to a certain extent TCR UK and even WTCR, they all have twistier tracks. This is a factor which makes BoP more difficult.”
