Sunny Wong and Alex Hui secure both poles at Guangdong

Sunny Wong and Alex Hui have taken both pole positions for the first two races tomorrow for the TCR China Touring Car Championship at the Guangdong circuit for Teamwork Motorsport, setting them up comfortably for the title.

The Hong Kong-based team had led the way through both practice sessions, while it was a close fight in Qualifying 1, with Sunny Wong battling against the lighter Alfa Romeo Giulietta TCR of Freely Racing and their new signing Ma Qing Hua.

Wong’s first lap of 1:21.5 was beaten by Ma with a time of 1:21.269. Wong responded just before the end of the session in his Volkswagen Golf GTI TCR, going just 39-thousandths of a second faster, while Ma headed back out to respond but just missed the chequered flag and had to settle for second.

Third fastest was the HE Racing Volkswagen of Tian Li Ying, just under a second behind.

In the second qualifying session, it was Wong’s co-driver Alex Hui who secured the perfect start to the weekend for Teamwork Motorsport, placing the #11 Golf GTI TCR again at the top of the time sheets, six-tenths of a second clear of Li Shi Cheng’s Leo Racing Volkswagen.

It was a Volkswagen 1-2-3-4 in Q2, with Li Xue Feng and Mai Yi Bo completing the top four, with the TA Motorsport Audi RS 3 LMS of Gary Lo fifth quickest, with the Alfa Romeo now down in sixth in the hands of Xia Yi Li, 1.5 seconds off the pace, with the Teamwork Motorsport Audi of Shi Nai Jie bringing up the rear in seventh.

The first race of the weekend is scheduled for 09:20 CST on Sunday (02:20 CET), with Wong just needing to finish the race in order to secure the drivers’ title for himself and Hui in the first heat.
