Broc Feeney wins from pole in second Gold Coast encounter

Broc Feeney bounced back from a difficult Saturday to secure victory in the second Supercars race of the weekend on the Gold Coast as seven drivers secured their place in the next stage of the end of season Finals.

Feeney had qualified on pole on Saturday but struggled in the wet conditions to fall down the top ten, but the Triple Eight driver recovered to take a relatively straightforward victory.

Having once again topped the times in qualifying, Feeney led team-mate Will Brown away at the start before an early caution period for debris caused by a tyre on the car of Anton De Pasquale letting go as he recovered to the pits following lap one contact.

De Pasquale was one of three drivers looking to remain in title contention to hit trouble on that first lao, with Kai Allen and Jack Le Brocq also getting caught up in contact that saw the latter forced to pit.

Once the race got underway in earnest, Feeney was able to control proceedings from the front and was able to secure victory in relative comfort – albeit without the sizeable advantage at the front that Chaz Mostert had enjoyed on Saturday.

Brown held position early on but would ultimately slip back down the order, not helped by picking up a final warning for track limits that forced him to be careful, with Brodie Kostecki getting ahead after the first round of stops having pitted early from a battle just outside the podium spots.

Kostecki would get within a second of the leader after the second stops, but Feeney was ultimately able to ease clear during the final stint to take the win by just under seven seconds.

Third place was all about securing a spot in the next stage of the Finals, with Mostert – who had already qualified – working to try and help team-mate Ryan Wood secure a berth when he allowed his fellow Toyota driver to move ahead.

That would have been enough to put Wood through as a result of De Pasquale’s early dramas, but late pit stops from Jarrod Hughes and Cooper Murray helped fellow Chevrolet man De Pasquale gain enough places to ensure that he sneaked through instead.

Hughes had been set for a top six finish without the additional stop, which the Erebus Motorsport squad blamed on a ‘mistake’ with fuel calculations during his earlier visits to the pits.

As a result, Mostert reclaimed his place on the podium on the final lap ahead of Wood, with Andre Heimgartner and Matt Payne close behind to complete the top six. Despite his front-row start, Brown failed to even make it into the top ten as he slipped down to eleventh by the finish.

Alongside Wood, Allen and Le Brocq were also knocked out of the Finals, with Allen taking the flag in 13th and Le Brocq two laps down in 21st after his early stop to repair the damage he sustained on lap one.

Next up for the Supercars field is the Sandown 500 on November 6-8.
