Brodie Kostecki wins Sandown thriller as Triple Eight suffers disastrous race

Brodie Kostecki secured his place in the Supercars Championship Adelaide Grand Final with victory in the opening Sandown 500 race, while title contenders Will Brown and Broc Feeney endured a disastrous race for Triple Eight Race Engineering.

Grove Racing’s Matt Payne initially led from pole position before a safety car was deployed when Aaron Cameron’s Ford Mustang caught fire on lap 13.

The resulting pit stops saw Brown emerge ahead of Kostecki and Payne, with the Triple Eight driver resisting repeated attacks from Kostecki.

Kostecki eventually took the lead on lap 36, while Brown spun at Turn 4 attempting to reclaim the position and dropped to the back of the field.

A second safety car prompted another round of pit stops, with Waters emerging ahead of Kostecki.

However, Kostecki reclaimed the lead with an aggressive move at Turn 6 on lap 43 and gradually pulled away to secure victory.

Payne recovered to second after passing Waters on lap 65, while Chaz Mostert briefly took third following contact with Waters before returning the position to avoid a penalty.

James Golding completed the top five ahead of Anton De Pasquale.

Triple Eight endured a particularly difficult race as Feeney suffered severe rear tyre degradation and dropped to 11th.

Brown’s afternoon deteriorated further when he received a 15-second penalty for spinning Cameron Hill, leaving him classified 20th.

Kostecki’s victory guarantees him a place in the Adelaide Grand Final, while Payne leads the standings by 42 points over Kostecki.

Mostert holds third, with Feeney occupying the final provisional qualification position just one point ahead of Waters.

The remaining three Grand Final positions will be decided in Sunday’s second 250-kilometre race at Sandown, starting at 15:30 local time/05:30 CET.
