Broc Feeney claims Sprint Cup title at Queensland Raceway

Broc Feeney claimed the Sprint Cup title during the Supercars Championship race weekend at Queensland Raceway after winning the third and final race.

Race 1

The first of three races was won by Dick Johnson Racing driver Brodie Kostecki who beat pole sitter Matt Payne heading into the first corner.

The pitstop saw Kostecki falling behind Toyota driver Chaz Mostert and Ford rival Kai Allen who both pitted early.

Allen made his way past Mostert for the lead at Turn 5, with Kostecki following past up into second place as Mostert went wide.

And Allen’s lead only lasted a couple of corners further as Kostecki made his way back past into the lead.

Mostert fell another position on the next lap as Payne went past, with Allen receiving a five-second penalty for the contact with the Toyota driver.

Kostecki won the race by just over two seconds ahead of Payne while Brown was elevated to the final podium due to Allen’s penalty.

Feeney came home in fourth ahead of the penalised Allen while Mostert was sixth.

Race 2

The second race saw Payne once again starting from pole, but this time managing to stay ahead of Kostecki heading into Turn 1.

But Payne’s lead only lasted for two laps as Kostecki managed to pass at Turn 6.

Allen pitted early and managed to get ahead of Kostecki as the pit stops were completed.

Kostecki tried to take the lead back on lap 22, but braked too late and went off into the gravel which saw him drop down to fourth place.

The safety car headed out on track on lap 24 as Rylan Gray beached his Dick Johnson Racing-prepared Ford in the gravel trap.

The field was released six laps later and Triple Eight driver Brown launched an attack on Payne for second place soon after the restart, completing the move at Turn 3.

The safety car was issued again after two laps of racing as wild card driver Ben Gomersall went off.

The race resumed with just five laps left and Brown was once again on the move at the restart, passing Allen at Turn 2 for the lead.

Kostecki followed past and tried to challenge Brown for the lead, but went wide and had to defend from Feeney instead.

Brown claimed his first win since last year, just below a second ahead of Kostecki while Feeney completed the podium.

Allen finished fourth while Mostert and Payne rounded off the top six.

Race 3

Brown started the third and final race from pole ahead of team-mate Feeney.

Feeney immediately challenged Brown for the lead and managed to get past at Turn 3 on the first lap.

Mostert and Payne both fell victims of engine issues, retiring on lap 23 and 31 respectively, putting Payne out of contention for the Sprint Cup title.

Kostecki was making ground throughout the race, passing Allen for third on lap 31 and Brown for second place two laps later.

The Dick Johnson Racing driver closed in on Feeney but did not manage to get close enough for an attack.

Feeney won the race by just below 1.5 seconds over Kostecki, securing enough points to win the Sprint Cup title.

Brown claimed the final podium spot, close to 14 seconds behind his team-mate.

Allen finished the race in fourth for Grove Racing, Jamees Golding was fifth and Anton De Pasquale sixth.

Feeney is back in the drivers’ championship lead, 30 points ahead of Payne.

The next Supercars Championship race takes place at The Bend on September 11-13.
